Kauai’s Most Contaminated Stream
Waipoli Stream, which meets the Pacific ocean at Mahaulepu Beach, is Kauai’s most polluted fresh water stream. Several years of water quality testing has consistently revealed high levels of enterococci bacteria (found in fecal matter) at hundreds of times above the Hawaii’s limit for safety. This bacteria poses a serious health threat to humans, coral reefs and marine life alike. Add to that the tons of plastics, commercial fishing nets and man-made detritus that washes up on its beaches, and Mahaulepu has a very real and critical pollution problem.
