Aloha Malama Mahaulepu Supporters,

We have been hard at work this past month reviewing the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed industrial dairy. The public has just under one more week to submit comment on the DEIS (Monday July 25th), though we strongly encourage participants to provide comments by this Friday July 22nd.

The DEIS is intended to discuss significant impacts, both short- and long-term, and propose appropriate mitigation actions that can minimize potentially adverse effects. You may comment on the DEIS even if you did not comment on the EIS preparation notice.

Comments should address which of the project’s potential impacts should be further studied, measured and considered before release of the final EIS; these letters are not letters of support, protest, or other opinion.

We call on community members to respectfully advocate for a thorough examination of the deficiencies or areas of concern found within the document. A number of our members have asked us to provide some examples that would be useful in addressing concerns over impacts. While we encourage supporters to advocate for the issues in their own voice, we have provided a number of talking points that can be useful in both establishing significance and articulating expectations for what should be included in the Draft EIS.

  • “Environment” in the “Environmental Impact Statement” means both natural and human environments. Impacts to communities, public health, cultural heritage, ecosystems and natural resources can be considered
  • State your concerns over the proposed dairy operation and what Hawaii Dairy Farms failed to consider in the drafting of the EIS.
  • List the issues you feel should be addressed in the final EIS. Ensure the issues meet the significance criteria (addressing at least one of the thirteen), found on page 4-2 of the environmental notice.

To comment by mail, please mail your comment to both the DOH and Group 70, postmarked no later than 07/25/2016:

Community participation is key to developing a comprehensive EIS. We encourage the community to join us as we engage constructively in the process.
